American Trash 2011
Kevin’s toms are what make this song anthemic. I was worried it was gonna sound too much like a Coldplay song, not that that’s a bad thing. We closed with this one quite a few times, and it was always a fitting end.
Todd’s work is subtle but effective. Tasteful, as the good Dr. always is. Still a record for the longest I’ve ever held a note…and the further I get away from cigarettes (16 years now) the easier it gets.
A few lines in this one I still love. “Coal burning in green eyes” …that red flash around pupils that fade into the emerald. “I held my ears so I could hear your sound”…Never wanted to forget that voice, so I blocked everything out for a few moments to keep it there on the edge of memory.

You left in the cold gray dawn
With nothing but the taillights on
I held my hands till they turned black
I looked up and you weren’t looking back
Coal burning in green eyes
And you were never one for saying goodbye
The stronger the rain the harder the flood
The deeper the cut, I guess the darker the blood
Now you’re kicking up the Midwest time
With your foot on the floor and nothing in store
You’re shutting down the left side
Never blinking, or batting an eye
You left behind some pictures and a rosary
But neither one ever did a damn bit of good for me
So I put your things back into the ground
And I held my ears so I could hear your sound
Now you’re kicking up the Midwest time
With your foot on the floor and nothing in store
You’re shutting down the left side
Never blinking or batting an eye
Baby can’t you see
Don’t you know
I’m the reason everything goes wrong
No I don’t mind if you come home
I got a new girl
But I’m still alone
