teach me to die

(American Trash 2011)

Todd’s mandolin is the star of this particular show. Whatever gold and diamonds he was digging for, he found in endless supply. I did my simple 2-3 chords, Am-C and throw in a G somewhere. Todd took it to the level of record worthy.

Words wise, I used to be a huge Westerberg fan. I still like the Mats and his solo work, but I find myself skipping it on the mix. 28 year-old me never would have dreamed of doing so. I think that started after I read the definitive story of the Mats. I realized I would have hated being around the guy.

But, I stole the title from a line in one of the songs off of Folker. I can’t for the life of me remember which tune, and I don’t have the desire to dig through lyrics. But, what a great line. The man can write, no doubt about that.

I’m pretty sure I stole a Richard Bucker line as well. Thanks Buck, I always appreciate the help.

Teach me to Die

Did she know what it meant?
Fourteen years with of summer’s spent
Trudging through the thick brew
She swore all she wanted was what she knew

She said that she was waiting on a man
To come on down and take her hand
And lead her through the rest of her years
She spoke with shaky hands full of salty tears

And she said, “Teach me to die”
Blown out from the wind with a desert dry
Yea she bought a calendar just to watch it turn
And she lit up the year just to watch it burn
To the ground

Her mother told her it would be this way
But she grew up in the dark with her daddy away
So she fucked her way through her single days
She had a couple good ones
But they never stayed

And she said, “Teach me to die”
Blown out from the wind with a desert dry
Yea she bought a calendar just to watch it turn
And she lit up the year just to watch it burn
To the ground

She said there’s never nothing new
No there’s never nothing new
